Report: Indian Navy Speedboat Kills 13 in Ferry Collision.

Mumbai, India (December 19, 2023) – A tragic maritime accident off the coast of Mumbai has claimed 13 lives, sending shockwaves across the nation. A naval speedboat, undergoing engine trials, collided with a passenger ferry carrying over 100 people, resulting in the vessel capsizing.  

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon near Butcher Island, approximately 8.25 kilometers from the Gateway of India. The ferry, named Neel Kamal, was en route to the popular tourist destination of Elephanta Island when the collision took place.

Immediate rescue operations were launched by the Indian Coast Guard and Navy, involving multiple vessels and helicopters. The swift response helped save numerous lives, with over 100 passengers and crew members being rescued. However, the tragic loss of 13 lives, including civilians and naval personnel, has cast a somber shadow over the incident.

Horrifying videos captured by eyewitnesses have emerged, showing the moment of impact. The footage depicts the speedboat circling the ferry before abruptly colliding with its side, causing the vessel to tilt and capsize. Passengers can be seen struggling to stay afloat as the ferry sinks into the turbulent waters.

Gautam Gupta, a passenger on the ferry, recounted the terrifying ordeal, stating, “I initially thought the speedboat was performing stunts and was filming it. But then it crashed into us. It was chaos. People were screaming and jumping into the water.”  

Navy Acknowledges the Tragedy

The Indian Navy has expressed deep regret over the incident and has launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the collision. A preliminary investigation suggests that an engine malfunction may have contributed to the accident.
